Steps and how to learn to recite the Holy Quran

It is the etiquette when reciting the Holy Qur’an to recite leisurely without haste to understand and contemplate its meanings, as for how to recite the Qur’an, it can be summarized in the following points:

1- Oral

This is done by the reader learning to recite the Qur’an by a proficient sheik who reads the recitation and has knowledge of the provisions of intonation, where the sheik reads and repeats the reader behind him, and intercession is the first method used in teaching the Holy Qur’an, so the Companions – may God be pleased with them – learned the Qur’an orally from the mouth of the Prophet – may God bless him and grant him peace – which shows the importance of the masterful sheik.

Intercession has two types, either the presentation by presenting the student’s memorization understanding determined by the Sheikh to correct his error or by indoctrination, by imitating the method of his Sheikh in the same way that he performs.

2- Tajweed provisions

The application of the rules of Tajweed on recitation must be taken into account, as the provisions and rules devised by the scholars of Tajweed were quoted from the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and the Muslim must apply these provisions and work with them to recite the Qur’an elaborately.

Through it, the reader knows the rulings for each of the letters, which helps him in the good recitation of the Qur’an and the quality of performance, and to avoid melody and error.

3- Listening a lot to Quran recitation

Frequent listening to the recitation of the Holy Qur’an contributes to controlling the correct pronunciation, fixing the Qur’an in the breasts before the lines, and making the Qur’an intact free of any errors or exaggerated melodies.

4- Use of audio recordings

And ready-made tapes, but you should not rely on this method, as it does not replace the presence of a skilled teacher or a proficient sheikh to follow-up, evaluate and ensure the validity of the recitation.

When did the recitation and recitation of the Qur’an begin

The beginning of recitation and the science of tajweed dates back to the era of the expansion of the Islamic state in the third century of migration, after the entry of many dictionaries to Islam, a great murmur spread in the letters, as well as many errors and melody in the Holy Qur’an, which attracted the attention of scholars who began to codify the provisions of intonation and its rules.

It has been said that the first to put it is “Al-Khalil bin Ahmed Al-Farahidi” and some of them said: “Abu Al-Aswad Al-Du’ali” while it was also said: “Abu Obaid Al-Qasim” and is considered the first to set the rules of intonation is Imam Al-Khalil bin Ahmed Al-Farahidi, and the first to write in it Imam Abu Al-Khair Muhammad bin Ahmed Al-Jazari in the “Book of Introduction to the Science of Tajweed” in the third century AH, but the one who collected the readings in his book “The Book of Readings” is Abu Obaid Al-Qasim.

Some have argued that the first to write in intonation “Abu Muzahim al-Khaqani” in the late third century AH, but did not use the word intonation, but rather good performance, he said: “Whoever reads the Qur’an, performs well” and the meaning of not using this term is that he was not famous at the time.

What is the difference between recitation, intonation and Tajweed?

intonation means reading in general, reciting the Qur’an, that is, reading it.

As for recitation, it is reading Quran carefully and understanding without haste or haste to understand the purpose and meaning of the verses, and recitation occupies the first place of reading, where recitation comes, then rotation, and then regression in terms of preference.

Some interpreted the recitation by Tajweed in the letters by knowing the standing, by taking them out of their exits and giving them their characteristics of amplification and thinning.

Therefore, intonation is a general term that includes reading, while recitation is one of the ranks of intonation and is the best of all.

And Tajweed  in the language means improvement and mastery, it is said: shred the thing or the quality of the thing in the sense of good and mastered, and Tajweed of quality, and the opposite: mediocrity. We can say that recitation is also one of the ranks of Tajweed because the reader without knowledge of the rules of Tajweed cannot recite the Qur’an properly and perfectly.
