Surah Al-Inshirah is also known as surah Al-Sharh and surah Alam Nashrah. It is the 94th surah of the noble Quran in 30th Para. It is one of the shortest Surahs of the Quran comprising 8 verses. The meaning of Al-Inshirah is “solace” or “comfort”.
Asbab al nuzul of Surah Alam Nashrah
According to the subject matter, contextual background, theme, and the placement of the surah, it is believed that this surah was revealed following the surah Al-Duha. In both surahs, Allah (SWT) has showered His favors and blessings to assure and comfort the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) at the time of his prophethood and spreading of Islam.
The time of 13 years in Makkah was a great revolution for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). People of Makkah who once respected the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) before his prophethood, turned into his enemies and tried to kill him many times when he called them to one Allah (SWT). His relatives turned their backs on him and he was only supported by his uncle Abu Talib, wife Khadija (May Allah be pleased with her), and his companions. After the deaths of his uncle and wife, he was left in grief.
Due to these severe hardships in his life, Allah (SWT) revealed the surah Al-Duha and surah Al-Inshirah to comfort his Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by mentioning glad tidings of His benedictions.
Surah Al-Inshirah affirms the three divine bounties and comforts to the Messenger of
Allah (SAW):
- Allah (SWT) will open his heart (to all the hidden).
- He (SWT) will remove all the heavy burden on him.
- He (SWT) will exalt his name in the whole world.
Allah (SWT) mentions in verses 5 and 6 of the surah Al-Inshirah: “So verily, with every difficulty, there is a relief.”
This verse is a message of hope and encouragement. Clearly, Allah (SWT) consoled His Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by declaring that all hardships and pains are accompanied by ease and comfort.
In the last verses, Allah (SWT) provided the solution to every problem. He told the Messenger Muhammad (ﷺ) to turn to Allah and remember Him in distress and suffering and to please Him by good deeds.
Surah Alam Nashrah benefits and virtues :
Surah Al-Inshirah is the primary source of several potential benefits and spiritual healings. This surah is often paired with Surah Al-Duha to gain their effectual advantages. The recitation of Surah Al-Inshirah is not only beneficial but also rewarding for its reciters.
The Holy Prophet (ﷺ) said: “One who recites Surah Al-Inshirah is similar to the one who has met Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and if in state of grief, Allah will remove his sorrows.”
Imam Sadiq (May Allah bless him) said: “He who repeatedly recites surah Al-Inshirah during day and night, all his body parts will testify in his favor on the Day of Judgment.”
Imam Baqir (May Allah bless him) narrated about the reciter of surah Al-Inshirah: “He who recites surah Al-Sharh during day and night, will die as a martyr and resurrected as a martyr and resembles one who fights in the way of Allah with his sword along with the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Whoever recites surah Al-Sharh and surah Al-Fil in the Fajr Prayer will never become blind.”
It has also been reported by the Prophet of Allah (SAW) that Allah (SWT) also grants good fortune and faith in the religion to the reciter of surah Al-Inshirah.
Besides these spiritual benefits and virtues of Surah Al-Inshirah, there are various physical benefits of recitation of
this surah. Reciting Surah Al-Inshirah is good for,
- Relieving heart and chest pains.
- Granting health and certitude.
- Protecting while traveling in the sea.
- Helping in easy childbirth.
Recitation of Surah Al-Inshirah also aids in increasing the wealth. Apart from this, one of the most significant benefits of reciting this surah is the increase of memory and concentration.
Imam Ahmad Rida Khan (May Allah bless him) said:
“To increase one’s memory, recite surah Al-Inshirah 17 times and blow into the water and drink that water.”
Moreover, the recitation of surah Al-Inshirah is the spiritual cure for the ailment of the kidney. Drinking the water of this surah removes kidney stones and urine blockage.
