Surah Al Maryam is the nineteenth Surah of the Quran. It was revealed in Makkah. Hazrat Maryam (A.S) was the mother of Hazrat Isa (A.S). She was one of the most blessed and dedicated women in the history of Islam.
The Surah was revealed by Allah to prove her dignity and nobleness among those who were cruel to her. The Surah also discusses life after death, rewards of being kind to humanity, and explains the lifestyles of some important Prophets.
REASONS BEHIND REVEALING SURAH AL MARYAM
Every Surah in the Quran has a history which is the reason for its revealing. Allah has revealed Surah Al Maryam to address certain concerns of Muslims. Some major reasons are briefly described below:
- ALLAH CARES FOR US
Hazrat Maryam (A.S) had chosen to devote her life to worship Allah. She loved to spend her time praying and helping others. Allah sent Angel Jibrael to give the news of her pregnancy. Maryam was frightened and scared about society. How they might react and wonder how she alone can be pregnant.
When the labor pains became unbearable, she started praying for her death. Indeed Allah is the greatest. He guided her to the stream of water where she sat under the palm tree. They helped Maryam to satisfy her thirst and hunger from a freshwater stream and fresh dates. She became a mother of Hazrat Isa (A.S), without any help from the midwife or doctor.
- ALLAH SHOWS SIGNALS
When Hazrat Maryam (A.S) got to know about pregnancy, she started asking Allah how she can carry a baby when she is not touched by a man. She was scared of how society will accept her as a noblewoman. Allah answered her questions. Only He knows what is right and He can create the signs for the people to understand what is going on. Allah can always bless us in unexpected ways. Nothing is impossible for Him.
- ONLY ALLAH CAN RESCUE YOU FROM HARD TIMES
Every person faces hard times in life. Allah never leaves His followers in difficult circumstances. He described the incident of Hazrat Zakariya (A.S) and his wife, how they were eagerly waiting to be the parents. They had a firm belief in Allah and it paid off. Allah blessed them with a child after a long wait. It showed Allah tests His believers and rewards with the best later. No doubt, He is the best planner.
- ALLAH IS THE GREATEST
In Surah Al Maryam, Allah has announced the blessings waiting for humans in Jannah. He promised the unseen servants all the time in Paradise. Allah guided Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to inform the Muslims about the rewards waiting for them. All the blessings will be given as a result of believing and keeping faith in Allah.
- WOMEN ARE THE SACRED CREATURES
Allah has chosen Hazrat Maryam for this noble assessment. This indicates that women are the spiritual creatures of Allah. They shouldn’t be judged based on their appearance. She was selected as a carrier to convey the message of Allah. As a reminder that no woman is lesser rather deserves respect.
