The need for the recitation of the entire Surah of the Holy Quran is known to every  recite Muslim because the

Quran,

in its entirety has a lot of benefits.

In contrast, some Surahs have specific benefits attached to them. Among the surahs that have additional

importance are Surat Al-Falaq and Surat Al-Nas, which are called Muawidhatayn. They are both called

Muawidhatayn because they seek Allah’s protection. Just like if you memorize the first ten verses of

Surah Al-Kahf, you will be protected from the Dajjal (antichrist).

Every verse in the Holy Quran has revealed a particular occurrence at the time that the prophet needs the

revelation from Allah (SWT). Most of the verses have a reason behind their revelation, and these reasons are called

Sababul Nuzool. For example, Surat At-Taubah revealed when Allah (SWT) ordered the Muslims to fight the

disbelievers. At the same time, Surat Al-Kawthar serves as a source of joy to the prophet (ﷺ).

The Sabaabul Nuzool of these two Surah

is about a Jew who bewitched the Prophet (ﷺ) using the hair he got from the prophet comb. This Jew called

Labeled bn Al-a’Sam, and he is from the tribe of Banu Zuraiq. Labeed employed a boy who works in the house of the

prophet (ﷺ) to get hold of the prophet (ﷺ) comb. Immediately he got the material he wanted to use for his

magic; he did the magic and put it in a well called Dharwaan.

When he completed his magic, the prophet feels that he has met with his wife when, in reality, he has not seen them.

For some period, the prophet remains in this state before Allah (SWT) sent two angels to him. These angels inform

him about the cause of his ailment, the person who did the magic, and where the magic is done. When the prophet

understands his ailment’s origin, he called his dearest wife Aishah, and he informed her that Allah (SWT) had

guided him regarding his ailment.

The prophet

went to the well with some of his companions, including Ali bn Abi Talib, Az-Zubair bin Awwam.

When they got to the well, the prophet (ﷺ) met the well precisely as he saw it in his dream. The water in the well

appears as if henna soaked in it, and its palm trees were like the devil’s head.

The prophet removed the magic made with his comb and attached hair while reciting these Surahs. When he recites

one verse, the knot will loosen a bit till it is completely loosened. After this occurrence, the prophet used the

Muawidhatayn to seek Allah’s protection from all evil. At the same time, he also advised his followers to recite them

for Allah’s protection.

The Muawidhatayn the Surah’s, which the prophet said the like of them revealed before. The

prophet (ﷺ) advised Uqbah to recite them in the morning when he woke up and when he wants to sleep.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Verily, the people do not seek protection with anything like these

two:

Say: “I seek refuge with the Lord of Al-Falaq.”

Say: “I seek refuge with (Allah) the Lord of mankind.”

Therefore, Muslims should explore the benefits of these Surah’s so that they can be guaranteed Allah’s protection

from all evils. I ask Allah (SWT) to forgive us and make us among the pious believers.
