What is the concept of interpretation?

Interpretation of the Noble Quran in Arabic means clarification and clarification, which is indicative of the statement and detail of books, so we say the interpretation of something, that is, its statement and clarification or revealing what is in it and clarifying it.

And interpretation is a term that means that it is a science that means the Holy Qur’an as much as a person’s capacity, as it is concerned with understanding the verses, their explanation, the reasons for their revelation, and their arrangement according to the Meccan and the Medinan, and clarifying the clear and the similar, the permissible and the forbidden, the abrogated and the abrogated, the specific and the general, the absolute and the restricted, and the lessons and proverbs.

The science of interpretation is a science that examines how to pronounce the words of the Qur’an, its meanings, and its synthetic and individual rulings. It is a science that guides us to understanding God’s words and extracting its rulings.

What is the meaning of the Interpretation of the Noble Quran?

Interpretation of the Noble Quran is a science that seeks to clarify the meanings of the words of the Qur’an in terms of their significance to the will of God Almighty and what is benefited from them, and it deals with the words of the Qur’an from the side of searching for its meanings and what is deduced from it.

The approach of interpreting the Holy Qur’an with the Qur’an is one of the types of interpretation, which is the first course resorted to by the interpreter, and it is intended to interpret the Qur’anic verses to each other, in the sense of making them witness to each other or linking the verses of similar pronunciation to each other and interpreting each other

and the righteous predecessors have unanimously agreed that it is the healthiest and greatest method of interpretation. Ibn Taymiyyah said: “The most correct way to interpret the Qur’an with the Qur’an, for what is beautiful in one place has been interpreted in another place, and what is shortened from one place has been simplified in another place.”

What is the benefit of the interpretation of the Qur’an?

The science of the Interpretation of the Noble Quran is of great importance that we should not overlook. And the lessons, consolidating the foundations of the faith and fixing it in the soul, and the benefit of the interpretation of the Qur’an is evident in the following points:

1- Interpretation is how we can understand and contemplate God’s words and reach the true purpose behind them.

2- This science clarifies many things that some people do not know, as understanding the Qur’an has a disparity between people, and the interpreter can reduce this disparity when clarifying the intention and correct understanding.

3- Knowing the legal rulings, and interpretation is necessary in understanding the legal ruling to investigate the halal from the haram, and the right from the falsehood, as some verses include legal rulings such as clarifying the rule of worship and others.

4- Identifying the news of nations, where the Holy Qur’an mentioned the stories of the former, which people were ignorant of and had no previous knowledge of, so the Qur’an told the stories of the prophets and their conditions and their call to their people, and the importance of interpretation is evident in clarifying these stories and linking events to each other.

5- Reviewing the events of the Prophet’s biography, as the facts that occurred at the time of the Prophet did not come all at once, but in batches according to the facts, and the science of interpretation shows these events and facts and the reasons for the descent and deducing what is meant by the story.

6- The correct interpretation of the Holy Qur’an provides the interpreter with the mechanisms and arguments of defamation of religion because it informs him of the conditions of other peoples with clarification of the natures that belong to each religion and the rights and duties of the Muslim vis-à-vis other religions.

Why was the interpretation of the Qur’an called an interpretation?

The Holy Qur’an is the word of God shown, and interpretation is the clarification and manifestation, and the interpretation of the Qur’an means the statement of books, detail, and clarification, it is a science that guides to understand the words of God – Almighty – home to the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace,

and researchers have inferred in the interpretation of the Qur’an the necessity of this approach because of its close link to the Qur’an, Sunnah, and biography, as this approach includes Al-Masadiq and methods that benefit the interpreters themselves, such as returning similarities to the courts and linking between the public and the private.

The interpretation of the Qur’an with the Qur’an, in the sense of making it a witness to some of them, i.e. clarifying the verses of the Qur’an with other verses to clarify their intention, the verses of the Holy Qur’an are the source for the interpretation of other verses, and therefore the interpretation of the Qur’an is an interpretation in itself.

Who was the first to interpret the Noble Qur’an?

The use of Interpretation of the Noble Quran dates back to the time of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, and it was used by the Companions, followers, and imams after him. Thus, we deduce that the Prophet was the first to interpret the Qur’an to clarify its meanings and the semantics of its words and pronounce it to the Companions,

and after that, the Companions played their role in spreading its clarification and teaching it to the followers, until the science of interpretation arose in the common and correct sense of the word, so the scholars began to put their books on interpretation relying on other sciences.

The science of interpretation is a science that began with the Prophet, and from him, the companions learned it, then the followers, including Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, Omar Ibn Al-Khattab, Othman bin Affan, Ali bin Abi Talib, Abdullah bin Abbas, Abdullah Ibn Al-Zubayr, Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari, and Abdullah bin Masoud.

When was the Qur’an interpreted?

The science of Interpretation of the Noble Quran existed since the time of the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, when the Companions used to ask him about what was confusing them. Schools also spread during the era of the Companions to interpret the Qur’an in Mecca and Medina,

but the codification of the Fundamentals of the Qur’an came late. In the late era of the Umayyads and the beginning of the era of the Abbasids, the interpretation passed through several stages:

  • The first stage: collecting the interpretation within the books of hadith.
  • The second stage: singling out the interpretation and making it a science on its own.
  • The third stage: is interpretation by opinion or interpretation by proverb mentioning the chains of transmission and abbreviating them.

Types of Interpretation of the Qur’an

The types of interpretation are multiple according to the curriculum, such as interpretation of the dictum, interpretation of the Qur’an, interpretation of the Sunnah, interpretation of the sayings of the Companions and the followers, the interpretation of the opinion, and the interpretation of the language and the interpretation of judgments,

as the species are multiple according to the method of interpretation itself, such as the overall interpretation, detailed interpretation, comparative interpretation, and objective interpretation, and in the following points we explain the types of interpretation according to the curriculum:

1- Interpretation of the maxim

The interpretation is based on the interpretative sources, which are represented in the Noble Qur’an, the noble Sunnah of the Companions, and the sayings of the Companions.

2- Interpretation in the Qur’an

4- Interpretation by the sayings of the Companions and the Followers

If I say the Companions are reliable evidence, they can’t lie, especially in transmission and frequency, and it is sufficient for them to meet the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, as the Noble Qur’an was revealed in their Arabic tongue, and what was transmitted from them shows the correct understanding, normal instinct, and purpose Al-Hassan,

and then the interpretation of the Qur’an returns to what the Companions said, so what they said is what they transmitted from the Prophet and what they orient themselves with.

5- Interpretation by opinion

The interpretation of the Qur’an by opinion means that the verses are interpreted by applying the mind, not just transmission, by contemplating the verses of the Wise Remembrance, looking at the evidence, and deriving knowledge from them, provided that the mind does not contradict the transmission, and then the interpretation by opinion has conditions related to the interpreter himself, including:

  • The correct belief and sound mind.
  • The interpretation is by what the Qur’an came with.
  • The intention is pure for the sake of God Almighty.
  • Mastery of the Arabic language.
  • Mastery of the sciences of the Qur’an.

6- Interpretation in the language

This interpretation is attributed to clarifying the meanings and connotations of the Noble Qur’an by referring to what was mentioned in the tongue of the Arabs.

7- Interpretation of rulings

The interpretation of the verses of rulings means the interpretation of the Qur’anic verses that are associated with legal rulings that correct behavior and discipline the soul.

How many sources of interpretation?

the compilations of the books of interpretation varied to the compilations of interpretation by tradition, interpretation by opinion, non-Sunni interpretations, and compilations of analytical, total, jurisprudential, rhetorical, philosophical, objective, social, and literary interpretation, including theoretical and practical indicative.

An example of this is the saying of the Almighty:

(O you who believe, fulfill the contracts, I refer to you the beast of cattle, except what is recited to you) [Ma’idah] He interpreted his saying: (Except what is recited to you).

In another place, the Almighty says:

(I forbid you the dead, the blood, the pork, and what is worthy of anyone but Allah by it, and the strangled, and the burned, and the degraded, and the nation, and the seven eat only what you have intelligent, and what is slaughtered on the monument). [Ma’idah].

2- Interpretation by Sunnah

An example of this is the saying of the Almighty in Surat Al-Baqarah:

(Those who eat usury) as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) interpreted it by saying:

(Gold with gold, silver with silver, righteousness with righteousness, barley with barley, dates with dates, salt with salt, for example, hand in hand, whoever increases, or increases, has been raised, the taker and the giver alike).

3- Interpretation by opinion

Examples of interpretation by opinion include the saying of the Almighty in Surat Hud:

(Who wanted the worldly life).

This verse guarantees everyone who wants to benefit from the pleasures and goodness in this world, and this applies to the believer and the unbeliever.

However, the Almighty says in the following verse:
