The history and reasons for the descent of Surah Al-Qari’ah

Surah Al-Qari’ah is the 101st surah in the Holy Qur’an, and the number of verses is 11, and the surah talks about the Day of Resurrection and the conditions of people on that day.

The surah presents some scenes from the horrors of the Day of Resurrection, such as the tremor of the earth and the fragmentation of mountains, and describes the condition of people flying like bedding spread around the fire, and also deals with the fate of the pious and the disbelievers on the Day of Resurrection.

The pious whose good deeds are heavy in their balance will have a contented life, while those whose good deeds are light will have shelter in the fire.

One of the purposes of Surat Al-Qari’ah is to warn people of the torment of the Day of Resurrection and encourage them to do good deeds and follow the right path in life, and the sura also aims to remind people of the importance of preparing for the Day of Resurrection and thinking about the possible consequences of their actions, and the surah focuses on three main aspects:

  • Addressing the events and horrors of the Day of Resurrection.
  • Clarifying the fate of pious believers.
  • Clarifying the resting place of the unbelievers who deny.

There is nothing in the reasons for the revelation of the Qur’an that indicates the reason for the revelation of Surat Al-Qari’ah, but it can be said that this surah was revealed for two main purposes:

  1. Reminding people of the Day of Resurrection, its terrifying events, and the reward that awaits the servants on that day.
  2. Warning people of the torment of hell, urging them to perform good deeds, in order to win bliss in paradise.

Some of them have linked the sura to what was mentioned in the previous surah, it came in Surat Al-Adiyat – which concluded its verses by mentioning the Day of Resurrection and the events of the Baath – has come as saying: {Does not know if scattered in the graves} Surat Al-Qari’a came after it, to clarify, interpret and clarify life after the resurrection, explaining the conditions of people.

The Striking Calamity –
What is the Striking Calamity?
And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?
It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,
And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.
Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],
He will be in a pleasant life.
But as for one whose scales are light,
His refuge will be an abyss.
And what can make you know what that is?
It is a Fire, intensely hot.

The Qari’ah (The Striking Calamity)

It is one of the names of the Day of Judgment, named so because people will be struck with fear on that day. The Qari’ah refers to the instrument of striking, which symbolizes the terrifying events of the Day of Judgment.

And what can make you know what is the Qari’ah?

It means, what can make you understand what the Day of Judgment is and its terrifying events.

On the Day when people will be like scattered moths,

It means that on the Day of Judgment, people will be scattered and separated, not recognizing or caring about each other. Each person will be preoccupied with their own self and the horrors they will face on that day.

And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.

As for those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],

It means that those whose scales are heavy with good deeds on the Day of Judgment will have a pleasant life, indicating the blissful existence in Paradise. They will enjoy comfort and tranquility.

But as for those whose scales are light,

It means that those whose scales are light with bad deeds on the Day of Judgment will have a miserable life, indicating the punishment of Hellfire. They will suffer from torment and regret.

His refuge will be an abyss.

It means that their abode will be in the Fire, which is their ultimate destination and place of return.

And what can make you know what is the Abyss?

A blazing Fire.

It means that it is a fire with intense heat, unbearable for its intensity. It sears the flesh and burns the bones. Its inhabitants find no comfort or tranquility but instead experience pain, sorrow, and remorse.
