Number of surahs of the Holy Quran

The number of surahs of the Holy Qur’an is 114, and it is divided into two parts:

  1. Meccan surahs: They are 85 surahs.
  2. Civil surahs: which are 29 surahs.

As for the number of verses of the Holy Qur’an, there is a disagreement between scholars, and the most correct opinion is 6200 verses, and the reason for this disagreement is due to the fact that some consider the basmala a verse, while others did not consider it.

As for the number of letters of the Qur’an, Ibn Kathir mentioned 320015 letters, and the number of words is 770439 words, as for the number of years in which the Qur’an was revealed 23 years.

How were the surahs of the Qur’an arranged?

How the surahs of the Qur’an were arranged is disputed, as there are many opinions on this issue, and some have said that The order of the surahs of the Qur’an according to revelation, that is, is an arrest warrant, in the sense that we arrived as arranged by the Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and these opinions can be reviewed in the following statement:

1- According to some, the Prophet (peace be upon him) arranged the surahs of the Holy Qur’an based on Jibril’s (peace be upon him) directing. This is the first opinion.

2- In the second opinion, it is said that this process was carried out with the diligence of the Sahaabah (may Allah be pleased with them) that they placed the long surahs in the foreground, followed by the percentile (which are those surahs whose verses are one hundred or more), then the Mathani (which is less than a hundred) and then the preferred (the short surahs).

3- The third opinion combines the first and second opinions, as some of the surahs were arranged by the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and some were by the diligence of the Companions, which is the opinion that most scholars tend to.

Why is the Qur’an called Qur’an?

The Qur’an is called by this name because it combines and composes the surahs and joins them, and the word Qur’an means plural and annexation because it carried within it the stories, lessons, news of the first two and rulings, halal and haram, promise and threat, paradise and hell.

The origin of the word indicates the combination, composition, and annexation, Zubaidi said in the crown of the Bride: read the thing, that is, collect it and include it, and I read the thing Qur’an, that is, I collected it and joined it together, and the meaning of reading the Qur’an is that it is collected.
