Surah Al-Zalzalah is one of the surahs that amaze the eyes, and stop the chests, it carries great messages, and shows the horrors of the Day of Resurrection with everything it carries for humans, and also shows that the account and reward are in the hands of Allah, and that every person on earth will be held accountable for his work,
and in this article we will explain the reasons for the descent of this surah and the context in which it was revealed with an explanation of its most important virtues, and we also stop explaining the interpretation of the sura in detail.
The history and reasons for the descent of Surah Al-Zalzalah
Surah Al-Zalzalah was revealed in Mecca, which is one of the Meccan surahs, that is, which was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and grant him peace, before migrating to Medina, and the surah was revealed to warn people of the punishment of Allah Almighty on the Day of Resurrection, where Allah Almighty will hold people accountable for their deeds,
and will reward them with what they deserve, and it was said that the reason for the revelation of the surah is that some infidels were mocking the Day of Resurrection, and claiming that it will not come, so Allah Almighty revealed this surah to show them the truth of this remarkable day, His greatness, the horror of his horrors.
As for the subject of the surah, it talks about the horrors of the Day of Resurrection, and the account that will affect everyone, where Allah Almighty will hold people accountable for their deeds, and will reward them with what they deserve, and from the lessons learned from Surat Al-Zalzalah:
- That Allah Almighty will hold people accountable for their deeds on the Day of Resurrection.
- The Day of Resurrection is a great day and has many horrors.
- Belief in the Day of Resurrection pushes man to repent and seek forgiveness.
- Man must prepare for the Day of Resurrection by good deeds.
One of the most important purposes of Surat Al-Zalzalah is to confirm the Day of Resurrection and describe its aspects and what happens to the earth on that day, as the surah narrates about the breasts of people at the penalty and their surprise on that day and their vision of their actions and behaviors. She also tells us that on the Day of Judgment, the earth will complain about the deeds of mankind, by saying, “Then will its news occur.”

Virtues of Surat Al-Zalzalah
Surah Al-Zalzalah is a Meccan surah that talks about the Day of Resurrection and what precedes it and what follows in terms of reckoning and retribution. This surah has great virtues, including:
- Half of the Qur’an is modified as a reward for those who read it, as narrated from the Messenger of Allah.
- It collects many blessings and good deeds, and helps prevent diseases and heal the patient.
- It reveals the mysteries, exposes evil and harm, and reminds people of God’s justice and mercy.
- The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to recite it in two rak’ahs after Witr.
- Immunization of the Muslim from evils.

Tafsir of Surah Al-Zalzalah
Surat Al-Zalzalah talks about the horrors of the Day of Resurrection, and the accuracy of calculation, where Allah Almighty will hold people accountable for their deeds, and will reward them with what they have done.
When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake
And the earth discharges its burdens
And man says, “What is [wrong] with it?” –
That Day, it will report its news
Because your Lord has commanded it.
That Day, the people will depart separated [into categories] to be shown [the result of] their deeds.
So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it,
And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.
إِذَا زُلۡزِلَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ زِلۡزَالَهَا (1) وَأَخۡرَجَتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ أَثۡقَالَهَا (2) وَقَالَ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ مَا لَهَا (3) يَوۡمَئِذٖ تُحَدِّثُ أَخۡبَارَهَا (4) بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوۡحَىٰ لَهَا (5) يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَصۡدُرُ ٱلنَّاسُ أَشۡتَاتٗا لِّيُرَوۡاْ أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ (6) فَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيۡرٗا يَرَهُۥ (7) وَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٖ شَرّٗا يَرَهُۥ (8)

When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake,
This means that the earth will move from its place with a strong and intense movement, and that will happen on the Day of Judgment.
And the earth discharges its burdens,
This means that the earth will bring forth everything it contains, both the living and the dead, and it will manifest all the deeds of people, both good and bad.
And man says, “What is [wrong] with it?”
This means that man will say to himself, astonished by what is happening: What has happened to the earth? What has caused it to bring forth everything from its place?
That Day, it will report its news,
This means that on that day, the earth will speak and disclose everything that has happened on it, regarding the good and bad deeds of people, and it will inform about every individual’s actions in the world.
Because your Lord has inspired it.
This means that Allah, the Almighty, has informed the earth of what it must say on the Day of Judgment.
That Day, the people will depart separated [into categories] to be shown [the result of] their deeds.
This means that on that day, people will come out of their graves and go to their gathering place to witness the outcome of their deeds that they performed in the world.
So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it,
This means that whoever performs even the weight of an atom of good will see its reward on the Day of Judgment.
And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.
This means that whoever does even the weight of an atom of evil will see its consequence on the Day of Judgment.
