The history and reasons for the descent of Surah Quraysh

Surah Quraysh was revealed in Mecca, which is a Meccan surah, that is, it was revealed before the Prophet’s migration to Medina, and the surah was revealed in response to the plot of Quraish to Muslims, where they were subjected to abuse, insults and insults, and tried to prevent the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, from calling him to Allah .

It was said that the reason for the revelation of the surah is that the Quraish were boasting of God’s blessings on them, as they enjoyed security and prosperity, and they were traveling on the trade trips to the Levant and Yemen,

so Allah Almighty revealed this surah to mention His blessings on them, and drew their attention to the fact that He is the one who is blessed with them, and that he is the one who deserves thanks and worship.

The general context of the surah goes to the blessings of Allah Almighty on the Quraysh, where he made them safe in their country, and provided them with goodness, and facilitated their trade trips to the Levant and Yemen, which is a blessing that requires the thanks of the Creator Almighty, but they are familiar with grace and ungrateful to thank it, and they met the blessing of ingratitude and stubbornness.

Tafsir of Surah Quraysh

Surah Quraysh is a Meccan surah consisting of four verses. It speaks about the favor of Allah upon the Quraysh tribe and urges them to worship Him and show gratitude. Allah, the Almighty, says:

“For the accustomed security of the Quraysh – Their accustomed security [in] the caravan of winter and summer – Let them worship the Lord of this House, Who has fed them, [saving them] from hunger and made them safe, [saving them] from fear.”

The phrase “For the accustomed security of the Quraysh” means that Allah has favored the Quraysh tribe by granting them security during their winter and summer journeys. These were two trade caravans they used to undertake to earn their livelihood and acquire wealth. “Ilaf” refers to unity, harmony, and safety.

“The accustomed security [in] the caravan of winter and summer” clarifies that it is Allah who has granted the Quraysh security during their winter journey to Yemen and their summer journey to Syria. He protected them from dangers and aggression along their routes, making trade and sustenance easy for them.

“Let them worship the Lord of this House” urges the Quraysh to express gratitude for Allah’s blessings by worshipping Him alone without any partners. It encourages them to respond to the call of their Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him), and abandon the worship of idols that are neither beneficial nor harmful.

“Who has fed them, [saving them] from hunger and made them safe, [saving them] from fear” reminds the Quraysh that it is Allah who has provided them with sustenance during times of severe hunger and protected them from great fear, especially during the Year of the Elephant when He sent birds to destroy the invading army of Abraha. These are great blessings that deserve appreciation and sincerity.
